Enabling SMART Response System (SRS) Device Features in Aware
SchoolObjects:aware supports integration with the SMART Response System. Tested SRS's include the PE and XE models.
Before using the SRS devices with Aware, you must first enable support for them within Aware. A user with the Aware “Data Administrator” Role can do this by going to Aware->Analyze tab->”Configuration Options,” clicking on the “Testing” tab of the main pane, and then checking the “SMART” checkbox and clicking “Save” at the top of the main pane.
Setting up an Individual Test to use SMART Response System Devices
The test that you would like to administer with the response systems must have SRS support enabled as well. This happens automatically for Teacher tests after SRS features are enabled in the previous step. (See the image above.) Teachers who create and administer their own tests can use the SRS devices without worrying about the step below. They can skip to next section labeled “Administering the Test.”

Enabling SMART Response System Support for a District or Campus Test
After creating a local assessment on the Assessments Tab, the following shows how to set the test to be used with SRS.
In order for a Campus- or District-wide test to be available for teachers to administer with the SRS devices, the test must meet all the following criteria:
1) The test is linked to the teacher directly, or a course that the teacher teaches.
2) The test must have Response Pad Testing enabled.
3) The test must be in the “Active” state.
4) The current date must fall within the test’s “Start” and “End” administration dates.
For #1, the “Students” tab of the test editor is selected, and then the answer sheet generation method is chosen to link the test to a particular course or teacher. All options are valid here except for printing to an entire grade level or to an entire campus. This is because Aware would not know which teachers in the students’ schedule you would want to link the test to. See image below.
Also, in the image below, the “Math Grade 4” course is selected. Teachers who teach this course will be able to administer this test if all the other above criteria are met.
For #3, Campus and District Administrators must be sure the test’s state is set to “Active” in the upper right corner.
For #4, the “Start Date” and “End Date” must also encompass the current date in order for teachers to see it as an available test.
Lastly, the checkbox under “Student Response Pads” must be selected in order to administer the test using the SMART Response System.
