Goal setting is the first step in working toward improvement and growth. Setting goals is a process with continued review and feedback over the course of implementation. In Strive, goals are not just statements to create at the start of school and check at the end of year. Professional goals are interactive elements for incorporating evidence and tracking progress to engage conversation about growth between teachers and their appraisers.
Lifecycle of a Goal
Step 1: The initial step of a goal is its creation. This can be done at the start of school or during the summative conference at the end of a school year. When the appraiser and appraisee meet together to discuss growth, goals can be created at any point to provide the initial starting point for improvement.
In a formal conversation or by using Messages in Strive, the appraiser and appraisee can work together to formulate the goal.
Step 2: After a goal is created and meets the needs agreed upon by the appraiser and appraisee, then the goal is approved by the appraiser.
Step 3 Ongoing: Over the course of the goal, the appraisee AND the appraiser can be adding goal evidence including:
- Text field - useful for providing reflection comments
- File upload - upload certificates, images, student work, short video of a lesson, documents, etc.
- Link - connect to online portfolios, Twitter chats, folders, long-form videos, shared media, etc.
- Workshop Portfolio Entry - connects to PD credits to connect how professional development is working with goals
Appraisers and Appraisees can also Upload Documentation in the Evaluations tab that can be tagged to dimension as well.
Step 4: At the end of the year, all the data collected through goals, evaluations, and professional development are collected into the Summative panel in the summative evaluation document to guide the conversation between appraiser and appraisee about continuing or closing goals.
Step 5: In the Summative conference, the appraiser and the appraisee can decide whether to mark the goal complete or to copy the goal over to continue for the following year.
If a goal is determined by both the appraiser and appraisee to be done, then it is marked Complete and can be archived at the end of the year.
If the goal is determined by both the appraiser and appraisee to need continued work, then the process starts over when the Copy to New Goal is selected to make changes and resubmit the goal for approval.
